Following a speech in which he hailed the piece as “iconic” and likened it to Bitcoin, Sun bit into the banana in front of a group of journalists and influencers at a press event held at one of Hong Kong’s best hotels.
Sun said, “It’s much better than other bananas,” after his first taste. “It’s really quite good.” Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan produced the piece, “Comedian,” which was sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York last week.
There were seven bids, including Sun. Sun said that he had “disbelief” for a few seconds after winning the auction before recognizing the work had the potential to grow significantly in the public’s perception.
He quickly made the decision to eat the banana in order to create history. “Eating it at a press conference can also become a part of the artwork’s story,” Sun said.
When the piece first appeared at the 2019 Art Basel in Miami Beach, it caused controversy since many people questioned if it should even be regarded as art.
Cattelan himself wanted the work to question conventional wisdom about art. Sun also made comparisons between the piece and the new fields of NFT.

Sun said that he had only just made the decision to bid on the item and had first questioned how the artwork’s worth could be determined as well as if the fruit would deteriorate.
Sun also hinted that, like Bitcoin, the cost of his latest purchase would rise in the future. “I think the price will probably go up even more in the future, just like Bitcoin,” he said.
