Told local news site Fontanka that Shklyarov passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, following a fall from the fifth storey of a building.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Kasatkina said the event happened when Shklyarov was taking painkillers before a spinal surgery on Monday, Nov. 18.
According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, “the preliminary cause” of Shklyarov’s death has been determined.

When Shklyarov graduated from the Academy of Russian Ballet in 2003, he began working for Mariinsky Theatre.
After more than two decades of dancing with the theater group, he was promoted to principle dancer in 2011, making him the top performer.
The Mariinsky Theatre noted in a statement that “this is a huge loss not only for the theater’s staff, but for all of today’s ballet art.”
“Our condolences to the artist’s family, loved ones, friends and all the numerous admirers of his work and talent,” concluded the statement.
The theater’s homage closed with the statement, “His boundless creative abilities were recognized with numerous awards.”

Shklyarov appeared in Don Quixote, Romeo and Juliet, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty during his career.
In addition, he gave performances at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.; the Royal Opera House in London; and the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
