Told local news site Fontanka that Shklyarov passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, following a fall from the fifth storey of a building.
In a statement to PEOPLE, Kasatkina said the incident happened when Shklyarov was taking painkillers before a spinal surgery on Monday, Nov. 18.

When Shklyarov graduated from the Academy of Russian Ballet in 2003, he began working for Mariinsky Theatre.

The Mariinsky Theatre noted in a statement that “this is a huge loss not only for the theater’s staff, but for all of today’s ballet art.”
