Fans who miss the campy, soap opera Desperate Housewives often contact creator Marc Cherry. He is willing to restart it since he too misses it.
“I would probably want to do the idea maybe in an earlier decade,” Cherry said in an interview with PEOPLE that was released on Wednesday.
“Because Wisteria Lane is the character I really miss writing the most. We got the whole street, so it was the most entertaining playground anybody has ever had in television history. I am well familiar with the street.
The main characters Susan (Teri Hatcher), Gabrielle (Eva Longoria), Bree (Marcia Cross), and Lynette (Felicity Huffman) all lived in houses on the charming street.
From 2004 to 2012, viewers saw the ladies live out a lot of drama on what was essentially a set on the Universal Studios backlot, fall in and out of love, and raise their kids.
“When someone shoots a commercial on that street, I know it instantly, because I know all those houses, I know the geography,” Cherry said.
“Writing there was a lot of fun. And sometimes I ask myself, ‘You know what? Would it be possible for me to write Wisteria Lane in 1966?
According to Cherry, who went on to create Lifetime’s Devious Maids series, he has “a couple of ideas to do it,” but if he sets Wisteria Lane in the 1960s.
The characters that fans were familiar with in the original, who were in their 20s and 30s, wouldn’t have been born yet, or at the very least, wouldn’t be old enough to cause more trouble than constantly changing diapers.
Longoria said in June that she also misses the program, in which her character had an affair with Jesse Metcalfe’s character, the presumably younger gardener.
She told ET, “I’ve told him a hundred times,” about Cherry. ‘Let’s do it again,’ I thought. Wisteria Lane is missed. The girls are missed. Gaby Solis is missed. I want to be her again.
However, Longoria said in 2023 that she didn’t think her housewives’ future exploits would ever be seen on television.
“I’ve had multiple conversations with him,” Longoria said. It seems to him that there is no ‘Why now?’
He would not do it for the sake of a reset. “What do I have to say with these characters that we haven’t fully mined yet?” he thinks.
