The news that a beloved character’s voice actor is leaving the Simpsons after 35 years has hurt the show’s fans. Since very few of the key characters die in episodes and none of the characters age,
The long-running cartoon feels very familiar and comforting to viewers. This is one of its most reassuring features.
But since the voice of one of the most recognizable characters on the program is leaving, today is undoubtedly the end of an era.
Voice actor Pamela Hayden has been with The Simpsons since the start and is most known for her voices as Milhouse Van Houten,
Rod Flanders, and school bully Jimbo Jones. The 70-year-old has finally acknowledged, nevertheless, that she is leaving the show to retire.
The official Simpsons Instagram account shared a montage of Hayden’s most well-known Milhouse moments on social media to confirm the news.
The comment also confirmed that her farewell episode will be Treehouse of Horror Presents: Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes,
Which will premiere on Sunday, November 24. “Thank you for 35 years of Milhouse and so many more, Pamela Hayden,” it said.
“It’s time for me to put down my microphone, but how can I bid The Simpsons farewell?”Not easily,” Hayden remarked in a statement regarding her departure.
“It’s been an honour and a joy to have worked on such a funny, witty, and groundbreaking show, and to give voice to Milhouse and Jimbo Jones, Rod Flanders, Janey, Malibu Stacy, and many others.” she said.
“I’ll always have a special place in my heart for that blue-haired 10-year-old boy with glasses.” Naturally, the announcement upset fans; one fan wrote:
“Whoa a retirement? “Thanks Pamela for your years of dedication to the position,” one person said, while another added, “Milhouse, everything is no longer coming up.”
Others, appropriately worried about Bart’s best friend’s future, wondered whether the character would be cast again. One worried fan posted, “Is this the untimely end of Milhouse?”
Another fan added, “Does this mean no more Milhouse?!” “The Simpsons will always have a certain enchantment because of Pamela’s creativity,
Enthusiasm, and affection for her characters. “Everything’s coming up, Pamela,” said showrunner and executive producer Matt Selman in a statement.
“Pamela gave us tons of laughs with Milhouse, the unfortunate kid with the biggest nose in Springfield,” said creator Matt Groening.
“She made Milhouse hilarious and real, and we will miss her.” Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter have reported that the casting process for replacement actors is set to begin soon.
