Hunter Biden, Joe Biden’s son, was pardoned on Sunday for all crimes against the United States from January 1, 2014, until December 1, 2024.
Republicans and conservatives have strongly criticized the action, claiming it shows political partiality and compromises justice.
Hunter Biden, 54, was found guilty earlier this year of tax evasion and federal firearms crimes. He was found guilty in June of three crimes involving firearms.
Including possession of a weapon while under the influence of illicit narcotics, and entered a guilty plea in September to nine counts relating to nonpayment of $1.4 million in taxes.
Biden said that his son had been “selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted” in support of the ruling. “Despite relentless attacks and selective prosecution, there has been an attempt to break Hunter,”
The departing president said in a statement. Hunter has been sober for five and a half years. They have attempted to break me in an attempt to break Hunter, and there is no reason to think that this will end. Enough is enough.
Hunter Biden might face charges under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA), which were being investigated but never officially prosecuted, but the pardon essentially protects him from further punishment.
Donald Trump, the next president, denounced the pardon as “an abuse and miscarriage of justice.” Trump posed the question, “Does the pardon granted by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years?” in a post on Truth Social.
The action was also denounced by James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, who said, “Joe Biden has lied from start to finish about his family’s corrupt influence peddling activities.”
In addition to lying when he said that he would not pardon Hunter Biden, he also falsely claimed that he never met with his son’s international business acquaintances and that his son done nothing wrong.
Comer went on to say that Hunter’s claims were “just the tip of the iceberg” in the Biden family’s “blatant corruption.”
Hunter Biden thanked his legal team for the pardon in a statement, admitting his previous transgressions and promising to dedicate his life to serving others.
“During the darkest days of my addiction, I have acknowledged and accepted responsibility for my mistakes,” he said. “The clemency granted to me today is something I will never take for granted.”
The pardon was also attacked by IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler, who had earlier claimed that the Justice Department had obstructed investigations against Hunter Biden.
They referred to it as “a sad day for law-abiding taxpayers” and said that the president’s son was receiving preferential treatment from the Justice Department in a joint statement.
“The simple fact that the Justice Department almost cleared the president’s son of several felonies cannot be concealed by any amount of deception or spin,” they said.
Hunter Biden’s engagement in profitable international commercial transactions, including connections to Chinese and Ukrainian companies, during his father’s vice presidential term was the root of his legal troubles.
Evidence of contacts between the older Biden and Hunter’s business colleagues led House Republicans to look into claims that Biden was involved in these transactions.
In one well-known instance, Hunter Biden received a $1 million compensation from the Ukrainian energy business Burisma in spite of his inexperience in the field.
Hunter’s connections to Chinese state-affiliated businesses also came under investigation, including a $3 million payment from CEFC China Energy that happened soon after a meeting with Joe Biden.
The pardon comes as Donald Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris in the November election, is getting ready to become president and Joe Biden is getting ready to step down.
Additionally, the pardon follows the White House’s and Joe Biden’s repeated assertions that “no one is above the law” and that Joe would not pardon Hunter.
The pardon, according to critics, is an attempt to protect Hunter Biden from legal repercussions before to Biden’s departure from the White House.
“Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process, and it led to a miscarriage of justice,” Biden said, insisting the decision was not politically driven.
