According to many accounts quoting the state traffic police, three passengers were murdered in the San Francisco Bay Area after the Cybertruck they were inside collided with a tree and retaining wall.
According to KRON and KCRA, which cited the California Highway Patrol, the collision happened on Wednesday at around 3:08 a.m. in Piedmont, California, close to Seaview Avenue and Hampton Road.
According to state police, a Tesla Cybertruck crashed after jumping a curb and colliding with a tree and retaining wall.
The vehicle came to rest with its front end partly wrapped around the tree, as reported by California TV stations.
The Piedmont Police Department informed KRON that while the Cybertruck caught fire and burnt completely, the battery within the vehicle did not blow up or catch fire.
Piedmont police and the California Highway Patrol were called by USA TODAY on Wednesday, but they have not responded.
According to troopers, a bystander who was walking by helped remove one of the people sitting in the front of the Tesla, KRON said.
According to authorities, three other passengers were declared dead at the spot, and that individual was sent to a hospital in serious condition.
At the site, neighbors informed KRON that the dead were local college students spending the holidays at home.
“This is just a tragic loss of life,” Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said to Oakland, California’s KTVU, a Fox TV affiliate.
“We don’t know the cause of the collision and during the holiday season, our hearts go out to the families that are going to have to deal with this tragedy.”
The collision is being looked into by Piedmont police. Although officials have not yet ruled out drugs or alcohol as a role, Bowers told KTVU that the vehicle’s speed was a potential contributing factor.
