It’s not surprising that every little detail is being discussed in the aftermath of Friday night’s highly anticipated boxing match, which an estimated 120 million people watched on Netflix.
There were other occasions that raised eyebrows, from Mike Tyson’s notorious “missed opportunity” to his butt becoming an unexpected star of the show.
In front of 72,000 spectators at AT&T Stadium, the “Baddest Man on the Planet” engaged in his first professional bout in 19 years.
However, one little detail that caught the attention of both the commentary team and the audience was Mike Tyson’s habit of chewing his gloves.
“What causes Tyson to continue chewing his glove? Is it to prevent him from biting Jake? One admirer commented, “Please bite off his ear, Tyson.”
A former world champion named Tony Bellew tweeted, “Mike’s biting his glove cos he’s in pain,” among other explanations for his actions.
“His body isn’t cooperating, but his intellect, training, and muscle memory are there. Another person said, “Imagine wanting to do something and knowing exactly how to do it, but your body won’t let you.” “It’s frustrating, so he bites his glove out of frustration.”
Others who are certain that the fight was staged think Tyson was biting his clove to keep himself from just knocking Paul out.
“Mike Tyson had the chance to finish off Jake Paul at this very moment,” a reader remarked. “You are aware that he considered it. He chewed his glove after that.
In order to avoid throwing his gloves, Mike Tyson had to bite them. He was suppressing his inclination. #rigged,” someone else wrote.
Another X user shared their idea that Tyson was using the action as a “sign” for Paul to withdraw his punches: “Jake Paul was signaled to pull his punches by Mike Tyson biting his glove so often.”
Then after he finished chewing his glove, swing on. Keep an eye out for the pattern. Another said, “The match is fixed and was just done for money,” while posting a video of Tyson in training.
In contrast to Mike, Jake Paul was perspiring. The only reason he bit the gloves was to prevent himself from killing him. They warned him not to murder him.
But in a post-fight interview, Tyson cheerfully addressed the glove biting after the bout. 58-year-old Tyson said, “That was a habit of mine, biting my glove when I fight,”
When interviewer Ariel Helwani brought up the fact that some members of the commentary crew had been wondering what the in-ring gesture was all about.
“I have a biting fixation.” Naturally, Tyson’s humorous statement brings to mind his notorious disqualification in 1997 after shockingly biting off a portion of Evander Holyfield’s ear during a fight.
Tyson was fined $3 million and banned from the sport for a year as a result of the biting. Helwani joked, “I’ve heard about that, but I don’t want to know more.”
Paul easily defeated Tyson, winning 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73 to secure an undisputed victory on all scorecards.
Even if it was a joke, Tyson’s fight on Friday was important since it was his first time returning to the professional ring since losing to Kevin McBride by knockout in 2005.
This was Tyson’s return to professional boxing, albeit a less significant fight against Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition contest in 2020.
Unfortunately, it seems to be his last. “Iron Mike” said, “I don’t know,” when asked whether he would ever be back in the ring. Depending on the circumstances, I don’t believe so.
“I didn’t prove nothing to anyone, just myself,” Tyson said. “I’m not one of these guys who goes out to please the world, I’m just happy with what I can do.”
However, Jake Paul’s triumph increases his professional record to an outstanding 11-1, adding yet another feather to his crown.
Paul has previously defeated a number of lesser-known boxers and mixed martial arts competitors, but his victory against the boxing giant solidifies his position in the combat sports community.
