Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has been pardoned for his tax and firearm offenses.
In June, Hunter, 54, was found guilty on three crimes related to weapons, marking the first time a child of a serving US president was charged with a crime.
Despite having a crack cocaine issue, prosecutors said that he had misled on a paperwork while purchasing a Colt Cobra in October 2018 by claiming that he was neither a drug user nor an addict, according to Sky News.
Hunter was scheduled to face trial on criminal allegations of not paying $1.4 million in taxes while allegedly spending money on sex workers, expensive goods, and drugs. Two months later, he entered a guilty plea to federal tax charges.
Hunter was scheduled to be sentenced later this month in two different criminal cases, but his father, President Joe Biden, has now granted him a “full and unconditional” pardon.
In a White House statement, President Biden stated: “Even though I have seen my son being unjustly and selectively pursued.
I have been true to my promise that I would not meddle in the Justice Department’s decision-making process from the day I entered office.
“People are seldom put on trial for felonies based just on how they filled out a gun form unless there are aggravating circumstances, such as usage in a crime, numerous purchases, or purchasing a weapon as a straw purchaser.
“Usually, non-criminal remedies are granted to those who paid back their taxes later with interest and penalties after falling behind due to severe addictions. “It is clear that Hunter was treated differently.”
Hunter obtained mercy after being scheduled to be sentenced on December 12 for the gun charges and December 16 for the tax evasion counts.
The accusations against Hunter “came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress incited them to attack me and oppose my election,” according to President Biden, 82.
He said that Hunter’s plea bargain “agreed to by the Department of Justice, unravelled in the courtroom – with a number of my political opponents in Congress taking credit for bringing political pressure on the process.”
“No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong,” he said, addressing Hunter’s battles with addiction.
“Despite relentless assaults and selective prosecution, Hunter has remained clean for five and a half years. Attempts have been made to break him.
“They have attempted to break me in an attempt to break Hunter, and there is no reason to think that this will be the end of it. “Enough is enough.”
He went on: “I have always operated on the straightforward tenet of telling the American people the truth. They will be impartial.
“I believe in the justice system,” although he maintained that “raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice.”
He went on to say: “I hope Americans will understand why a father and a president would come to this decision.”
In the midst of the Delaware gun case, President Biden had previously told reporters, “I abide by the jury decision,” ruling out a pardon or commutation for his son. I’ll do it, and I won’t forgive him.”
On November 8, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated: “That subject has been posed to us many times. Our response, “no,” remains unchanged.
In a different statement released on Sunday, Hunter said that while he has “admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction.”
His errors “have been exploited to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for political sport.”
“If we never take for granted the mercy that we have been given, we can be given the opportunity to rebuild our lives and make amends where possible,” he said.
“I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering.”
Donald Trump, who defeated Kamala Harris in the most recent election and will become the presidency in January, expressed his opinions on Truth Social.
He wrote: “Does Joe’s pardon of Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have been imprisoned for years and number around 562 persons.
Who were involved in the Capitol disturbances in 2021? “Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”
