The Israeli cast of a new Biblical epic that will be available on Netflix this Christmas is causing internet outrage.
Israeli actress Noa Cohen plays the title character in Netflix’s “Mary,” which will be available on the streaming service on December 6.
Ido Tako plays Jesus’ father, Joseph. Through the perspective of Mary, Jesus’ mother, the coming-of-age story retells the well-known biblical event.
“Directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia) and written by Timothy Michael Hayes, this uplifting biblical epic follows.
Mary, Joseph, and their newborn son, Jesus, as they flee the relentless pursuit of King Herod, portrayed by two-time Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins,” stated the website of Netflix.
Social media users who are anti-Israel and angry at the choice of Israeli actors to play Mary and Joseph have been attacking Netflix nonstop since the release of the movie’s teaser on November 12.
In the past, director D.J. Caruso justified the use of Israeli performers for the parts. “To ensure authenticity, we wanted Mary and the majority of our main cast to be chosen from Israel,” he told Entertainment Weekly in October.
A number of internet users are now advocating for a boycott, arguing that the movie is historically incorrect since Mary and Joseph were “Palestinian.”
“Instead of casting Middle-Eastern Christians to play the roles, the director casted European Israelis to play the roles for ‘authenticity’ reasons… yeah boycott this crap!” One account insisted that its profile have a Palestinian flag.
After labeling the director’s choice to use Israeli actors “diabolical,” one video post on X with over 1.6 million views called for a boycott of the movie.
“After removing all Palestinian content, Netflix is suddenly streaming a Mary movie with an all-Israeli cast while the same individuals are bombing Christ’s birthplace?
The profile with “Free Palestine” in its bio wrote, “Boycott that s—.” This is blasphemy, antisemitism, and untruth.
According to another narrative, Jesus, Mary, and every other character in this production ought to be Palestinian.
